One way to learn is through repetition but you can also learn through mental rehearsing (This has been well studied with sport people).
• You can ‘rehearse’, in your mind how you want to be on the day: feeling at ease next to the examiner, your mind is clear etc and because you do that while in a relaxed state, you neutralize the perception of ‘danger’ associated with the test.
• You then 'anchor' these feelings of control and relaxation and have access to them during your test.
• You can also identify with someone who is good in those situations (a friend may be). You learn to behave confidently by reacting "as if " you were them and your subconscious accepts this new data as reality.
• While relaxed, your body releases Endorphins. These hormones neutralize the damaging effect of stress hormones (see Fight or Flight). They help regulate breathing, release muscle tension, improve concentration, memory and focus. Isn't that just what you need during your test?
Your brain is like a Sat Nav, the device where you punch in where you want to go and it takes you there.
Whether you have failed a test before or whether you keep imagining the worst case scenario, you are programming your brain for failure! And everytime that you repeat these thoughts, you reinforce their power! Scary, isn't it?
You must remember that you need to 'punch in' where you WANT to go... Not where you DON’T want to end up! You don’t go shopping with a list of things you don’t want!
This Mental training programme will tell your brain how you want to be during your test. By entering new data (calm, focused concentration) you will re-programme your mind for success.
Your unconscious is a record of ”actions-reactions”. It is programmed to make decisions similar to what is already in its data base. It stores these programmed behaviours and replays automatically the same reactions for the same signals. It just repeats what’s on the tape!!
So if you panicked on the day, guess what's stored in your unconscious?
Yes, you’ve got it: Panic!
